What Is a Cavity?

A cavity is a damaged area in a tooth caused by tooth decay. It can begin as a small area of damage and become deeper if left untreated. Cavities develop when bacteria in the mouth use sugars from food and drinks to produce acids. Over time, these acids can damage the tooth.

What Are the Early Signs of Cavities?

Cavities do not always cause pain in the beginning. Early dental decay may be difficult to notice without a dental examination.

some may notice

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Pain when eating or drinking
  • White, brown, or dark spots on a tooth
  • A visible hole on tooth
  • Food getting stuck in one area
  • Tooth pain
  • A rough or uneven area on the tooth

Some cavities may cause no symptoms in the early stages.

Can a Cavity Have No Symptoms?

Yes. A cavity can develop without pain, especially in its early stages. This is one reason regular dental check-ups are important.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Common factors include:

  • Frequent sugary foods and drinks
  • Plaque buildup
  • Poor brushing and flossing
  • Frequent snacking
  • Dry mouth
  • Not receiving regular dental check-ups

Can Tooth Decay Cause Pain?

Yes. As decay becomes deeper, it may cause sensitivity or toothache. However, early tooth decay may not cause any noticeable symptoms.

Can Cavities Heal Naturally?

A developed cavity generally cannot repair itself completely. However, very early tooth mineral loss may sometimes be reversed with good oral care and fluoride.

Once a hole has formed in the tooth, the damaged tooth structure cannot grow back naturally. A dentist may need to remove the decay and restore the tooth with a filling or other treatment.

How Can Tooth Decay Be Prevented?

Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, limiting frequent sugary foods and drinks, and regular dental check-ups can help reduce the risk of tooth decay.

How Are Cavities Treated?

The treatment for a cavity depends on how much of the tooth has been affected by decay.

If decay has created a small cavity not affecting the nerve of tooth , a dentist may remove the damaged portion and restore the tooth with a dental filling.

If decay has reached the inner part of the tooth or the pulp nerve is damaged, root canal treatment may be needed to treat the infected or inflamed tissue and help preserve the tooth.

In many cases, a damaged tooth can be treated and restored. The appropriate treatment depends on the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues.
