A broken tooth can happen because of an injury, biting something hard, tooth decay, or an old filling. Even if the broken tooth does not hurt, it should be checked by a dentist.

What should you do?

  • Rinse your mouth gently with water.
  • Save any broken tooth piece if possible and bring it to your dentist.
  • Avoid chewing on the broken side.
  • Do not try to fix the tooth yourself.

Treatment depends on how much of the tooth is damaged. Your dentist may recommend a filling, bonding, crown, root canal treatment, or another treatment depending on the condition of the tooth.

A broken tooth does not always mean that the tooth needs to be removed. Early dental care may help save it.
